Diabetic Eye Examinations
Diabetes can significantly impact your eye health. Regular diabetic eye exams are crucial for detecting and managing potential complications, such as diabetic retinopathy, which can lead to vision loss if left untreated.
Why Diabetic Eye Exams Matter
Diabetic retinopathy occurs when high blood sugar levels damage the blood vessels in the retina. Over time, these vessels can leak fluid or bleed, causing blurred vision, floaters, or even blindness. Early detection and treatment are essential to prevent severe vision problems.
During a diabetic eye exam, our optometrist will use special equipment to examine the retina for signs of damage. If any issues are detected, we can recommend appropriate treatment options, which may include medication, laser therapy, or surgery.
If you have been diagnosed with Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes, your primary care physician will require you to have an annual dilated eye examination to monitor for any bleeding in the retina (back of the eye).
If you require a diabetic eye examination with a report sent to your primary care physician, please make sure to inform the staff when you schedule your appointment, as this service is different from a “routine examination.
