Glaucoma Diagnosis & Treatment

Glaucoma is a condition characterized by increased pressure within the eye, which can damage the optic nerve. In many cases, glaucoma is asymptomatic in the early stages, making regular eye exams essential for detection.

What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a painless and symptom-less condition in most cases until it becomes severe. It is one of the leading causes of vision loss worldwide, but unfortunately, many patients aren’t aware they are suspects for this condition unless they are being monitored annually.

If you have been told you were a glaucoma suspect, have a family member with glaucoma, or have not had an eye examination in a while, please let us know to schedule you for a comprehensive vision examination.

Below are example scans and visual fields showing a normal optic nerve, an optic nerve with glaucoma, and a visual field showing missing vision from glaucoma.

Understanding Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a condition characterized by increased pressure within the eye, which can damage the optic nerve. In many cases, glaucoma is asymptomatic in the early stages, making regular eye exams essential for detection.

Risk Factors for Glaucoma

Several factors can increase your risk of developing glaucoma, including:

  • Age: The risk of glaucoma increases with age.
  • Family history: A family history of glaucoma can significantly increase your risk.
  • Race: African Americans and Hispanics are at a higher risk of developing open-angle glaucoma.
  • Eye anatomy: Certain eye characteristics, such as thin corneas or large eyes, can increase the risk.
  • Medical conditions: Diabetes and high blood pressure can increase the risk of glaucoma.
  • Medications: Certain medications, such as corticosteroids, can increase eye pressure.

Glaucoma Diagnosis

During a comprehensive eye exam, your eye doctor will use specialized equipment to assess your eye pressure, examine your optic nerve, and measure your field of vision. These tests can help diagnose glaucoma and determine the severity of the condition.

Glaucoma Treatment

Treatment for glaucoma typically involves medication, laser therapy, or surgery to reduce eye pressure and prevent further damage to the optic nerve. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential for preserving your vision.
